Christmas Customs
Many
Christmas customs are based on the birth of Christ. Such as giving
presents
because of the Wise Men, who brought presents to the baby Jesus. Christmas
carols based on Christ's birth and scenes of the birth with figures of shepherds,
the Wise Men, and animals surrounding the baby Jesus.
But
some of the ways people celebrate Christmas have nothing to do with Christ's birthday. Many bits of older holidays have crept into Christmas!
It wasn't until
about 200 years after Christ's death that Christians even thought about celebrating his birth. No one knows the exact date of his birth. It is believed
that December the 25th was chosen to turn people away from celebrating other holidays in this time of the year.
Saturnalia,
was the Romans holiday that they celebrated in December. It was a time of feasting and parties. Also, in northern Europe there was a
holiday known as Yule. They celebrated this holiday by making great fires. They then
would dance around the fires, yelling for the winter to end. In time, Christmas took the place of these holidays. But people kept some
of
the old customs -- such as burning a Yule log and having feasts and
parties.
The word Yule is still used as a name for the Christmas season.
As time went on, new customs crept into Christmas. One was the Christmas tree,
which
was started in Germany. As the Germans settled in new lands they brought with them this tradition.
Last but not least is Saint Nick. A long time ago, a bishop named Nicholas
lived in what is now the country of Turkey. No one knows much about him. There are
stories that he often helped children in need. Many years after his death, Nicholas was
made a saint. In time, he became the patron saint of children.

Submitted by Dawn RossWhat is Vestibular syndrome?
Vestibular syndrome, or Old Dog Vestibular Disease, is often incorrectly termed "stroke".
The characteristic signs are loss of balance, leaning to one side, head tilt and rapid eye
movements (nystagmus), sometimes the loss of balance is so severe the dog rolls over and over.
What is the Vestibular apparatus?
The Vestibular apparatus in the inner ear is concerned with maintaining balance.
Are some breeds more prone to Vestibular syndrome than others?
There appears to be no breed predilection although the condition does appear to occur more in
medium and large sized dogs. Both mongrel and pedigree dogs can be affected but most affected
animals are more than eight years old, hence the alternative terms Geriatric Vestibular Syndrome
or Old Dog Vestibular Disease.
Does the condition get worse?
The condition is usually very rapid in onset and can occur in a matter of hours. However
once established it is non-progressive, i.e. it does not get any worse. Often it will rapidly improve.
What causes the condition?
The cause is unknown but trauma or stress can sometimes play a part.
What are the signs?
The characteristic signs are loss of balance, leaning to one side, head tilt and rapid eye movements.
Occasionally there will be incoordination and/or some paralysis, which indicates that the condition
is also affecting the brain stem. Occasionally the dog may vomit just before the onset of the
other signs. Inflammation of the external or middle ear may accompany the disease and
sometimes may be coincidental.
Treatment
Since the condition is almost entirely confined to elderly animals and the cause unknown, treatment is basically supportive. Rehydration and maintenance of fluid balance by means of intravenous fluid is often required, particularly if vomiting has occurred. Sedation may occasionally be required for dogs with severe disorientation.
Prognosis
Despite the severity of the initial signs in the majority of cases the prognosis is good.
Within 48-72 hours most uncomplicated cases show good improvement. If the brain stem is involved or if the condition is complicated by an extension of infection from the middle ear, improvement may take much longer.
Cataracts in dogs
What is a Cataract?
The eye is just like a camera. There is a lens which focuses light on to the retina
(the light sensitive surface at the back of the eye) and this can be likened to a film in a camera. If the camera lens is dirty or damaged, photographs will not be sharp or in focus. Cataract describes all or part of the lens which becomes opaque and does not allow light to pass through to be focused on the retina.
What causes Cataracts?
Some cataracts are the result of injury or diseases such as sugar diabetes.
Some appear to occur spontaneously and are age related. However the greatest number of
cataracts in the dog are inherited.
Are some breeds more prone than others?
Many breeds of dogs in the United Kingdom are affected with hereditary cataracts, among these
are the American Cocker Spaniel, Labrador, the Poodle, the Boston Terrier and the Welsh Springer
Spaniel to mention but a few.
Will the Cataracts cause blindness?
If cataracts occupy less than 30% of the lens or only one lens is affected they will often go
unnoticed by the dog. When the opacity is affecting about 60% of the total lens area, vision
impairment is usually apparent. If the opacity progresses to 100% of the lens then the dog is
unable to see. However whether the cataract remains static or does progress depends on the type
of cataract, the breed and other factors. Let your vet examine your dog if you have any worries about
the eyes and discuss your concerns with him.
Can anything be done to prevent my dog from going blind?
If the lens is sufficiently opaque to impair vision it can be removed by specialist surgical techniques.
Following the operation (lendectomy) the dog has a good chance of seeing again but the outcome
cannot be guaranteed.
How old will my dog be if he does go blind?
Since the major cause of cataract is hereditary, cataract progression varies from breed to breed.
In some breeds cataracts will develop relatively early in life whereas in others the first signs are detected when the dog is several years old and progression is so slow that dogs still have reasonable sight when into old age.
Editors NOTE:....
My Cuppycake had a start of a cataract before she was diagnosed a diabetic..August 2002.Due to my former vet.
not diagnosing her correctly and giving her antibotics..which she shouldn't have been given for the yeast
infection..(which should have been checked..as it is one of the signs of diabetes)..Cuppycake got very..very sick..
she didn't move for 2 days..even when I took her back to my vet...he still did not do any other test..just
gave some different medication...I again..not knowing my vet wasn't helping..gave these new medications to her...
She went completely blind..practically over night..I got her to my new vet I have had since she got extremely worse over the next few days..My new vets. have been wonderful..They are so good and so sweet..they take very good care of Cuppy..Cuppycake did have cataract surgery..September 10, 2002...she can see out of one eye..Which is the only good eye she had..(she was already blind in her left eye)..she doesn't see great..but she can get around on her own..and she isn't afraid like she was before..
My original vet had always been wonderful and kind to Cuppycake..and I never had a reason to not trust his judgement
and treatment by my baby..but this one time he screwed up..I came very close to loosing Cuppy..I could never
trust him again..I know that people make mistakes...but..this is a mistake that could never have been "fixed"
if I hadn't taken it on my self to seek another vet. to help my angel I know she wouldn't be here with me now..
So..if you feel your vet. isn't doing what needs to be done for your baby..no matter how much you may like
them...it never hurts to get another opinion..I am thrilled I did..just glad I didn't wait any longer than I did.

Wreaths
You humans can make a fun wreath using dog tags. You can also make one using dog biscuits.
If you use biscuits, be careful if the wreath is outside, some lucky four legged might get at it.
If it's inside, don't use anything in it us dogs can't eat if we can get at it.Remember that common yuletide plants such as poinsettias, mistletoe, ivy and holly berries can
make pets really really sick if we eat them!Pine Cones and Boughs Ever tire of doggy odor in the winter? Bring in some pine boughs,
put them in water on or near the woodstove and the whole place will smell nice and woodsy.
Not like something to roll in, more like what humans like.If you help the human bring in the
sticks, try not to chew any up on the rug. It makes a small project for the human to clean up.
If you get pine tar or sap on the rug, have them put ice cubes on it and then scrape up.
Don't eat the ice cubes until the humans are done with them!Trees
My Mommy told me that when she was young they had some pets around that climbed
the tree, tipped it over and smashed all the family ornaments. Then the cats ate some
tinsel and the dog and cat walked on the broken ornaments. So, I guess you need to be careful if you do the tree thing. Anyway, know that if you have pets,
and CATS are usually the worst, be careful about breakable ornaments. Because if they break,
then we might step on broken pieces, ouch. Some years Mommy said they used wire to secure the tree to the ceiling. Also, don't put tinsel or stuff like that on the tree unless you want to watch it coming
out of the cats until spring. If that happens, ick, but don't try to pull it out.Food
I love food. They say that I am on a seefood diet, see food and eat it! But us dogs really
need to be careful around the holidays, and we need our humans to love and take care of us extra special. Don't eat any poultry bones, they are good BUT they can splinter and cause bad things in your tummy. You can get stopped up or it might make a hole inside, and you would have to go to that vet er narry an and that can use up your whole allowance like for a year.Chocolate can kill us dogs, it's good but sure not worth missing the rest of the action.
Us middle aged and older dogs also can get tummy pain and that awful butt squirting for any
sudden change of our diet. Also watch out for chewing on that aluminum foil stuff, that can do
some bad things inside. For a special treat, have your human get you some "Frosty Paws". These are frozen treats for dogs,
they are so good and special and safe. Mommy says they are in the freezer section at the grocery
store, and if you can' t find them they have an 800 number you can call to find out
where they are in your town.Presents
Everyone loves presents, and us dogs are no eggs ception. But you know what we most like? To spend some time with our human, to hear their voice softly just for us, to feel their hands patting us. So if you can take a little time to spend with us, go for a walk and then when we come back it's time for hard goods, like a big rawhide or squeaky toy or something fun! My sister loves tennis balls, so once Mommy asked at the tennis
club what they did with old balls and they gave her a HUGE box. That was like a long time
ago and she still has lots.If you want to give a present to a human that has a dog, give them a coupon or something
to free up some time so that they can go do something fun with their canine friend.Winter Walks
If you live where there is snow, and you go out after dinner or furst thing in the morning, have
your human check in between your toes for snow when you come back. Also try not to walk
where they put that salt stuff down, it can burn your paws.

Doggie Smells
(to the tune of "Jingle Bells")
Dashing through the park
With our noses to the ground
Walking on our ears
Pretending to be hounds
Not using our eyes
We navigate by smell
If its over an inch high
Then, it’s got a tale to tell
Oh, Doggie smells
Doggie smells
Outside of our home
Oh we love those doggie smells
When on the leash we roam
Doggie smells
Doggie smells
Marking every tree
All our other doggie friends
Have stopped right here to pee!

Cheery Cherry Cream Cheesecake
1 8-ounce package cream cheese, softened
1 15-ounce can sweetened condensed milk
1/3 cup lemon juice
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 9-inch graham cracker crumb crust
1 21-ounce can cherry pie fillingWhip the cream cheese until fluffy. Gradually add the milk, continuing to
beat until blended. Add the lemon juice and vanilla, and blend well. Pour
the filling into crust. Chill for 2 to 3 hours. Top with cherry pie filling.
Makes 6 servings. Editors Note: I also use Strawberry pie filling..Love it!Doggie Recipes
Mash up 1 large can salmon (about 12 ounces?) with
its juices/oil, beat in 1 egg, 1/4 cup milk, a teaspoon
or so of garlic powder, and enough flour to make a stiffish batter.
Press into a greased baking pan and bake at 350
until firm and just beginning to crisp around the edges.
Cut into desired sizes while still warm. Refrigerate or freeze.
I think the egg and milk could be replaced with a bit of extra oil and/or
fish or veggie broth, and rice flour could be used, if necessary to
accommodate allergies.
I score the batter with the tines of a fork before baking, which gives me
guidelines for cutting it up. It makes a kind of firm, chewy treat, not
too greasy, and nice and smelly to keep pup's attention in training.
I started making videos on Poodle Grooming as a favor to some of my friends from the yahoo
poodle groups. I started with one basic poodle trim and did the video in my living room with my
own dogs as “models”. I had more requests for different and fancier trims and I kept adding to
the video until I got to the 3 hr. video I now sell. In the first videos it was somewhat difficult to
hear what I was saying much of the time and I didn’t have the camera zooming in on some of the
things I should have. I have since re-done the parts I was unhappy with visually and wiped
out the original audio to put in a “voice over”. Now the grooming instructions are clear and
easy to understand without the distractions of dryers, dogs barking or clipper noises. The
newer video portions have zooming in so you can see up close how to clean ears, trim nails, drain
anal glands, shave feet, etc. I have now branched out into more than just the POODLE grooming
videos. I now have several videos available including:"How to Groom Your Schnauzer”
“How to Groom Your West Highland White Terrier”
“How to Do a Teddy Bear Trim on any Breed”
“How to Groom Your Cocker Spaniel”
